Sometimes a science fiction vehicle doesn’t have to move in order to be transportation. Of all my favorites, this Victorian-era creation from the 1960 version of Wells’ time travel classic stands tall as one of the most beautiful. As much a gilded sleigh as anything else, with a great spinning dish/disk on the back, the time machine clicks along with clockwork precision, and in the best possible style. No wonder Rod Taylor insists on wearing a spiffy suit while piloting it. It practically demands it.
